The best dog-friendly hikes

Most trails around Lake Arrowhead sit in the San Bernardino National Forest and welcome leashed dogs. The standouts for dogs:

Little Bear Creek Trail — easy, shaded, with creek access; one of the best dog trails in the area. Heart Rock Trail — short and scenic (1.5–2 miles), leashed dogs welcome; a great everyone-including-the-dog hike. Heaps Peak Arboretum — flat, easy, ~1-mile loop; good for older or smaller dogs. North Shore Recreation Trail — moderate, 4 miles out-and-back along the lake's north side.

Harder options like the Arrowhead Pinnacles (boulder scrambling — fit, agile dogs only) and Deep Creek Hot Springs (long, hot, exposed, and dangerous for dogs in summer) are best skipped with pets unless you know your dog handles the conditions. Browse them all in the trails guide.

On the water and around the Village

The Lake Arrowhead Queen boat tour is dog-friendly, which is rare for a boat tour, and it's the only way your dog joins you on the lake (leashed and under control aboard). Around the Village, the outdoor waterfront, walkways, and many patios are dog-welcoming; individual shops and restaurants vary, so check each one. Keep dogs leashed. It's required, and it's smart with the mix of wildlife, other dogs, and traffic.

Where dogs can't go

Two limits. First, the public swim beaches don't allow dogs on the beach or in the swim area — Lake Gregory's swim beach is the main example. If a lake day is the plan, someone stays with the dog or you pick a trail instead. Second, Lake Arrowhead itself is private, so the members-only shoreline and beach clubs are off-limits to everyone without ALA access, dog or not. There's no public dog beach on any of these lakes, so plan on trails and the boat tour.

Mountain-specific dog safety

A few things that catch flatland dog owners off guard up here:

• Heat and sun. Summer trails can be hot and exposed, and pavement, sand, and granite get scorching — hike early, test surfaces with your hand, and turn back if your dog is struggling. • No water on most trails. Carry more water than you think, for the dog too; mountain air is dry. • Altitude. The Village is ~5,200 ft — dogs (like people) tire faster than at sea level the first day. • Wildlife and foxtails. Keep dogs leashed around wildlife, and check paws and coat for foxtails and burrs after hikes. • Winter. Snow is fun in short bursts, but watch for cold paws and salt; keep outings short in freezing weather.
